teaching artist statement
My artistic process has always been one of experimentation, of utilizing different media and materials, of exploring different subjects and styles. I like to try different things, or the same thing in many different ways. I am continually searching online, looking at artwork, finding artists using processes and ideas that excite me and make me want to try new things. I still haven’t found, and likely never will find just one style. Maybe that’s one of my strengths as a teacher? When people ask me what kind of art I make, my answer can change by the day, by the hour. I can show my portfolio of plein air oil paintings, or my figure paintings, of my illustrations done with pen and ink and colored pencil, of my collages made from various materials, of my clay sculptures and plaster casts, or of my art journals. I utilize this process of experimentation in my teaching and encourage exploration by individuals to pursue their own interests. I am interested in teaching thinking through making art. I'm interested in helping kids discover for themselves how to think... not in telling them what to think.
